I would like to listen to my dv9205 running upside down to listen and diagnose a buzz. Is it safe to gently turn a notebook completely upside down while running?

Other than the optical drive, I can't imagine any problem running a notebook upside-down or sideways.
-
I would probobly not suggest it, because of the HD is SUPER SENSITIVE!!!!! So do it at your own risk.

nothing wrong/bad with running the laptop upside down. just dont use the optical drive. the hard drives if u look at them are actually placed upside down in laptops anyways (with desktop PC drives the top label with specs/model# is on top). also when u have those usb enclosure drives which contain laptop/desktop drives, they can be placed on different angles and run fine, infact some enclosure designs place them on their sides and they work. only issue is sudden vibrations and shock which might disrupt or kill the drive. running it upside will be ok.

Nothing wrong with it, just make sure to flip it carefully and not quickly, as the HD is a moving object.

Thanks for the replies. I will turn it over gently.

You can turn it over. You can also use you optical drive upside down(if disk snaps in place) if you need to do that for diagnosis.
I would not recommend running it overturned (external monitor/keyb) and playing a game or other demanding software. Reason is heat, many notebooks will probably overheat or at least run hotter if upside down.
Good luck finding the buzz -

Or he wants to play quake while standing on his head

A laptop is made to be portable, so yes, it will run fine upside down.
That being said, no I don't recommend it.
