Is it worth the hassle to clean install my used laptop before selling it? How much more money would I get by clean install the system? Or should I just sell it with everything restored to factory default?

EDIT: I don't mean clean install by wiping the drive. I mean clean install by just installing the OS and the drivers while maintaining the functionality of the computer. (Need a lot of work)
In other words, my question is: how much more money are you willing to spend to have a computer without the bloatware as supposed with one?

A clean install would be best, besides there are probably files that you might not want in the hands of it's new owner.........

Best to wipe the drive clean writing zero's to it then do a clean install of an operating system.

Yes he is right according to what i've read there is a way people can look at your old files(if they tried too) even if you wipe the drive.

You could just buy a new cheap drive and install it(Hard drives are extremely cheap now)

it's called file recovery when you delete something it's not really deleted it's there until something is written over it, so if a file is deleted but you didn't download, use something to take it's place it can be recovered.
so if they really want to get a you a clean install won't help. so maybe you can get a cheap hdd like red dragon said

Hi, I don't mean clean install by wiping the drive. That can be easily done. What I mean by clean install is restoring the system with just the OS and drivers, without the bloatware which requires significant work since I have to hunt for the drivers/utilities and test them to make sure everything works properly.

99% of the world does not know how to read files off a formatted drive, including me. I really doubt anyone will care what files you had on that drive. Just format the drive and youre good to go. Its up to you if you install an operating system or not

People, the OP isb't asking whether to wipe the drive or not.

The OP is asking if he shoulkd clean instal the laptop or jsut do a standard recovery before selling the laptop.
    ______________
I would say sell with a normal recovery.

I mean, a clean instal will take you a lot of time.

From a time point of view you could easily increase the price - but then in these economic times people may not want to do this.

Offer the laptop with a recovery instal - make it optional at extra cost - possibly 100$ ore more (if you calculate 20-30$ and hour - 3-5 hours work easily) to have a clean optimized instal.

Usually when I sell my used digital devices, I always optimize them and then use it as a selling point on EBay.

For example. HTC Moguls go for an average of $110 used on EBay, highest I saw was $125. Mine wen't for $195 because I optimized it and pitched it well.

So yes, but you have to do more than just clean install. Hook that ish up and pitch it well. It pays off.

Do it. I fetch a good percentage more everytime I sell an OPTIMIZED used digital computer device on EBay. Sometimes as high as 80% more profit than others do.

But do more than clean install, hook that is up and pitch it well in the ad.

just do a factory restore and save you the hassle of installing everything yourself, then advertize on eBay as an OPTIMIZED system. Get the best of both worlds...

(who has defined what OPTIMIZED is... a system running with all essential programs, and a few vendor-specific programs to ease the work, sounds optimized to me :) )
