I have a lenovo x41 and I'm wondering whats causing it to be so slow, even after a fresh install of xp. If I decided to upgrade the harddrive would it make a difference because the processors only 1.5 ghz Pentium M.

IIRC, the X41 has one of these proprietary 1.8" PATA drives. They're slow alright, especially those of lower spindle speeds and lower capacities. I'd venture you'd get a performance boost if you could get a 5400RPM with a relatively large capacity... but they're expensive and hard to find.

I do believe that some of these X41 drive modules have a ZIF drive with an adapter; if you could find something like that, and replace the ZIF drive with a ZIF SSD, then we'd be talking... An Mtron ZIF SSD wouldn't be too much more expensive than some of the proprietary 1.8" PATA drives either.

Not totally sure on this whole picture, though. It's been a while since I worked with an X40/X41.

I believe you can buy adapters to use compact flash cards as hard drives in the X4x notebooks. You won't get a lot of space, but it'll be faster.
