This looks more like unimportant tidying up that is not being resolved.

Assuming this is windows7, a Laptop with infra red, and no other problems or odd noises are apparent Install this patch The Chkdsk.exe program does not start correctly on a Windows 7-based computer,
(Technically about failure to run the disk check but possibly relevant) and run chkdsk again at boot (automatically or by asking Windows to do a full check on C: which it will defer to the next boot). If it still does not clear the problem try running chkdsk from the DOS box repair console of a bootable W7 install disk. Beyond that it gets messy and unless you want to mess about the fastest solution may require a factory restore /reinstall

I would however suggest an immediate full back up just in case

I remember this happening endlessly on a studio 15 running Vista . . I seem to recall some combination of Dell and MS updates eventually cleared it.

MFT might be corrupt. Could try wiping w/a low level format, then installing stuff back onto it, but it's not a great long-term solution.

Bah, that's what I was afraid of...
I don't wanna wipe, and can't nearly afford a new disk.

I'll struggle by, hibernate more often than shut down maybe
