Hey all and thanks in advance to all of those who are able to shed some light on what might be going on
I've noticed in the last 6 months or so that my Sony VAIO VGN-SZ360PC (US model, purchased December 2006 2.0ghz dual core, 2gb ram, windows 7 RC) has been getting really really hot when running. According to many forums around the place, this isn't anything new. So i've got to run it on a cooling pad because otherwise it just shuts down on me when it gets too hot (near 90 deg C using temp monitor software)
Recently i upgrade the 120GB HDD to a 500GB HDD and thought I'd have a look around to see if I could find any dust near the fan or heatsink that might be causing the problems. I could find some in the heatsink but the fan was too difficult to remove and properly have a look at. So i made a video of what the fan does when the computer starts up. Have a look and let me know whether you think it is dead or just obstructed by a huge clump of dust in there, either way i think its clear why it is heating up now!
As you can see, it starts turning a bit then just gives in and dies on me

So would this mean that I should get someone to replace the fan? I'm travelling OS soon and would ideally like to take the laptop with me as its been very good otherwise. Or alternatively does it just need a good cleanout? Has anyone done a fan replacement on a similar model (or vaio's generally) and know how much it costs? It's out of warranty by the way.
Thanks very much in advance to all, cheers!!

I'm sure the fan could be serviced. It needs cleaning and lubrication (that thin white grease for small moving parts, used in VCRs usually). Fix your fan first before you attempt to start your laptop again. If the fan comes apart by itself without removing the heatpipe assembly it's even better. You got this far inside the laptop a couple more steps and you could fix your problem. If the fan has stickers on it remove them before disassembly.

you can take out the fan, plug it's port to another port that gives full energy.
e.g. plug it's port to usb.
a laptops fan would not spin in starting in my opinion.it will of course spin but slow.
shoot the air cooling systems.
Is my VAIO fan dead or dying? (VIDEO)
