i cant seem to tell when its/if its on when is it supposed to turn on i have been up to 60c and didnt really hear it, that was doing 3 virus/spyware scans. then when it stopped it jumped back down to like 48 or so. does jumping down 12 degrees mean the fan did it? or just from stopping doing those virus scans?

you need not worry. I don't think a computer can drop 12 degrees simply by switching off a program. The fans probably did kick in there.

Generally, some fans are given instructions on when to turn on depending on the heat. If you NEVER hear the fan, and your notebook is heating up a lot, then it is a sign to worry.

Your temps are fine. Worry if you are in the 80-90C range and there is no fan noise.
