Is my hard drive the only problem?

So my laptop is failing to boot. When I did a check in Disk Utility (Ubuntu) before it completely crapped out, it said it had bad sectors, but not that it was close to complete failure like it did for my old external. I have been just booting it off an old Ubuntu CD so I can check emails etc, but now even that takes like 2 hours to load up.

So my question is, is it worth just getting a cheap(ish) 2.5" and popping it in? Or is it likely that my laptop has other problems?

    Thanks

If it's not the HDD then it would be the RAM, they're the most common failures in PC's in general imo.

Try swapping out the RAM and testing just each stick by itself at a time.

If no change, then it's most probably the HDD.

Sounds like a hard drive problem, if it was RAM I think you would have seen instability before this.

Once you see any bad sectors, if you care about the data being housed it's best to abandon ship asap.
