I'm having a dialogue with the company I purchased my laptop from because the screen seems to be faulty. The trouble is the company isn't sure it agrees so I wonder what people on the forum think? This is the email I sent to them -

"I took some photos of the screen with my mobile phone, they aren't the best quality but they do show the problem.

In the startup screens, notice how there is a sort of "half moon" effect shining from the bottom of the screen.

In the "forum" pic notice how the topics are divided by black horizontal lines. These occur all the way down the screen but are not visible at the top and the bottom at the same time. To see the top of the screen clearly results in the bottom looking grey and faded, while looking at the bottom of the screen as it is meant to appear means that the lines on the top are not visible.

In the neverwinter pic, notice how though it is less obvious in a colourful setting, there is still a brightness emanating from the centre of the bottom of the screen.

In the system shock pics notice how the top of the screen is barely visible without moving your head. I imagine it would be almost impossible to play a game such as this as you cannot see all of the screen at once. Also notice in the 2nd and 3rd pic how the entire scene is meant to be black, in a sort of "matrix" effect, however on this screen the floor looks grey. In pic 4 at the top left and right you can see the letters "UNN" these are repeated in the middle top of the screen as well, however they are not visible in this shot. The system shock 5 pic is taken from the angle i had to move my head to for it to be visible. Finally picture 6 is of the menu for the game, note how the centre of the bottom of the screen is again brighter than the rest.

I definitely think that the screen is faulty, especially after trying to play system shock, it would be impossible with the current screen. What do you think?"

I originally posted in the Compal forum but I haven't had much help there.

It looks like you have some severe light leakage coming from the bottom of the screen. The other issues (not be able to see the top), seem to be a viewing angle issue.

Unfortunately, I doubt the manufacturer will do anything to you. Light leakage, dead pixels, crap viewing angles it all parts of LCDs, Some are good, some stink, it is just the way the industry works. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, but I don't know what else to say. Can you still return the notebook?

What notebook is this, what screen resolution and type?

That is way over acceptable as far as light leakage goes. Get it replaced, or return the thing. Be firm, and don't take no for an answer.

That is the key, be firm.

You gotta put your foot down because they manufacturer will try to say it is acceptable.

Thanks guys - Its a Rizeon IFL90, glossy screen, native resolution 1440x900. I've only had it for a couple of weeks (so its still under warranty) and its great otherwise but I definitely want a replacement screen. They've got a subforum here which I've avoided posting in about this as of yet, but I'll definitely start kicking up a fuss if they aren't helpful.

As for the viewing angle issue, thats a consequence of the light bleed as I have to have the screen at an improper angle for it not to be totally grey.

Light leakage indeed. Could be assembly related (diffuser badly placed or so) Personal suggestion: press them for an answer on whether they consider this a 'normal' screen or not. If the answer is yes, tell them you'll post this in every forum you can find with the titel "Screen quality you can expect from Rizeon". IF the answer is no you should have lottle problem pressing for a replacement.

Certainly looks like you have a really bad case of light leakage. Screen manufacturers vary between all laptops of the same model as well. Apparently, the Sager NP2090's WSXGA+ screen has some bad apples from some Chinese LCD firm, but personally my WSXGA+ screen is brilliant and virtually flawless in terms of light leakage, lack of graininess and contrast.

I'd certainly give them a call for a replacement in this matter, that's not even close to acceptable light leakage problems.

Is there any way I can find out the actual manufacturer of my screen in windows XP? Apparently Compal have had a shortage of screens and so been outsourcing them to other companies, it would be interesting to see who really made mine.

That looks like a severe case of heavy leakage. I recommend you return it and get a replacement.

OKAY COMPAL DOES NOT MAKE THEIR OWN SCREENS... so whoever told you that is a moron. no offense.. almosr every company outsources their lcd's witha very short list of execptions like sony, sharp, lg, and some toshibas and there may be a few others ..... clevo, sager, compal, lenovo, dell etc etc etc all outsource their screens and they ALWAYS CHANGE THEM all the time based on availability to them. one week they may use samsung the next week they may use lg, then go to auo they are constantly changing. again so whoever told you they are not using the screen they "normally" use is full of it..

you can tell who made it by going to device manager then to the monitors tab double click on that to open a new window. now you should see a tab on top that says details click that nwo in the new window you should see a pull down menu open that and look for hardware ids click that and please post what it says ill tell you who made it

My vostro came with a CPT141F screen (15.4" wxga) and the light bleeding is very bad as well, i am extremely disappointed with the viewing angles on this screen.
