I am buying a notebook in March...as everyone knows technology is changing generations right now with dual core and stronger GPUs....

My budget has slowly gone from 1500 all the way to 2500 dollars (USA)...

I need a notebook, the notebook i buy will be the end all notebook because I will have no desktop...so the notebook will serve as my primary computing machine (it will be hooked up to an LCD for more real estate)

I love to game which is why im not going mac as I once wanted to with the Macbook Pro...

So now, i sit here looking at current PCs....Will I see anything new and exciting by march with something better than an x700 and is the x700 really worth it?

How long do you think an x700 will be able to perform (even at the lowest settings)....

I am saying this all because my friend owns a ferrari 4005...I have used it and am in love with the design..He wants to sell it to me for 1600 which is a hell of a deal however I'm not sure that the x700 in it will last me 2-3 years...

This is where next gen cards come in...the x1600 specifically....This card is in the Acer 8204 which is currently at the top of my list...

NOW I NEED YOUR HELP! do you believe that the x700 will lastme atleast 2 years of gaming (even at low settings)....or do you think that i should spend an extra 900 dollars or so upgrading to the x1600....

I know the A series from ASUS has an x1600 coming, but the chasis is pretty ugly...

So is the up to the 8204 worth the money....and how long do you think an x700 will last...and finally, do you think i will see anythingbig within feb to mid march which could sway me from the 8204?

    my x700 = 3150 in 3dmark05

    100+fps in any RTS title

70+ fps in older 1st person shooters like UT2004 at max settings

newer titles like fear/battlefield 2 are still playable :D, just need to have 2gb of ram for best performance.

the x700 isnt the fastest of cards, but it is VERY capable

just my opionion, but im a reasonbly big gamer and it hasnt dissapointed me yet

the MSI 1039 which will be released soon, has an x1600, as well as many other models coming out this year that once used the x700.

Current generation games would run just fine, but don't expect anything to run great on it later this year. The X700 runs FEAR like garbage and newer FPS games (regardless of engine) wouldn't run any better than that. If you're serious about gaming, wait a little longer for laptops that are equipped with X1600 GPUs. Yes, I know, you can get the Acer Travelmate 8204 WLMi right now if the terrible keyboard doesn't bother you. I'd wait for ASUS' offerings (check the news page for more details) for way better build quality. Acers are mass-produced pieces of garbage IMHO.

X700? runs FEAR like garbage? I would disagree.

I'm running it at 800x600, 4X AF. Maximum everything. That's not what I call low-end, especially when talking about a notebook.

As to the original poster - the X700 should last you another year or two at low settings. However, if you can get an X1600, I'd definitely opt for that. It is about 30% faster than the current X700, and the difference will be especially evident in the latest games such as Quake 4.

The MSI-1039 as posted by Goren is well worth the wait in my opinion.

You can also check out the Acer TM8200, it has a Core Duo and X1600 256MB.

FEAR LIKE GARBAGE. That must be a very good garbage then. Chaz said everything. I would add that FEAR at 800x600 with all max looks great. Even hypermemory with extra 500-600 MB in RAM for high textures works great. mxm X700 for its price of 120 usd overhere is definetly worth having. Even 128MB DDR1 can score easily 2800 3dmark05 with moderate OC. 3100 with a bit of expertise.

    Cheers,
