I was wondering, most camera USB cables have a sort of "cylinder" between the plugs. I wonder what is that for, and I wonder if I could connect my camera with a regular USB cable (of course, with the right plug).

It is called ferret (I think), it helps limit the noise when transferring images and data loss.

Those cylinders are called ferrite cores. They are there to minimize RF interference. Many cables have these integrated, especially power cables. If you use a regular USB cable to link high speed devices and Windows starts giving you speed error messages, then that means it's time to get one of these cables.
Is the camera cable a regular USB cable?
