I need to know if there is a Optical drive to HDD adapter for the Acer Aspire 5315. An adapter that plugs in the optical drive slot to convert it into and extra HDD bay.

Here's part of a message i got from asking bigozone:

i have actually seen an optical drive shaped HDD holder that works with any center plug ODD, since acer is off-set,,, you have to attach the little adapter just like you would swap it when changing ODD. as for where to find that type of device i've frogotten long ago,, but i do remember that Ktron was the person who posted the link to the item when i saw it a few months ago.... but he may recall the site, or know where to get those OOD/HDD Cases.
just post a ? in HARDWARE & UPGRADES thread.. he is there alot...

Ktron once posted a link to a ODD shaped hard drive mounting solution...

it was an internal HDD enclousre for an IDE type 2.5" drive, that connected to the cd/dvd's internal connector...

i've seen what KEV is asking about, but i don't know where to find them at.

The device big O is remembering, is called a optical drive blank. They came standard on the Clevo D900K laptops, since they had two optical drives. Usually people would only buy one optical drive, so Clevo made a plastic piece which fit into the optical drive bay, so that their was no massive hole on the side of the notebook.

I have mine, but I am using it, but I know a guy who has one. It is blue, cause its from an Alienware rebrand, but it will be able to house your atapi to ide converter.

    Here is a linky:

If you click on the image of the blue alienware pieces you will see it in their.
He only wants $1 for it, so send him a message.

It is the blue plastic box between the touchpad and the palmrest.

    It looks like this:

maybe it wasn't you who posted the device i'm thinking of KTRON,,,

as i recall it was a METAL CHASSIS with extra venting for improved air flow... the device i remember was more than a blank and it was made of metal.

it was designed to add an extra IDE HDD in place of the ODD.

sorry if i was wrong,, i thought you had posted something like that.. my bad

they OP is looking for something like this

here are some more results from a GOOGLE search

well the OP can improvise. The blank has screw holes where the ATAPI to IDE converter screws into. From their, the harddrive can be installed.
The OP can use either double sided tape to keep the harddrive in one spot, or he/she can drill holes in the plastic optical drive blank and mount small metal 90degree pieces, so the harddrive can be permanently affixed to the drive blank.
Its possible and easy to do. Plus its much cheaper than spending lots of money for one which you can make for less than $5.
