Is there a way to downgrade the synaptics firmware from v6.5 to v6.3 to allow multi touch?

Should be as easy as simply uninstalling 6.5 via Control Panel, and then download and install 6.3.

I'm not sure you can change the firmware, as it's just a PS/2 device anyway. The multitouch feature is a feature of the drivers, not firmware. If it's a Synaptics touchpad made from 2004+ you can download Scrybe and have multitouch abilities.

The reason Im asking is because I have a touchpad that has multitouch abilities in windows, but linux will not acknowledge the touchpads ability to recognize more than one finger. I thought it might be a firmware issue

Nope. It's a driver issue under whatever distro you're using. I believe HP uses multitouch on some of their ubuntu distros. Maybe you could pull an installer package from there?
