    Hi

In short, I tried to upgrade the Sempron 3400+ in a Gateway Ml3108b. I have two replacement CPUs: a Turion MK36 and a Turion X2 TL50. After a 3-4 days I managed to get the MK36 to work. But when ever I put the TL50 in, the bios recognises it but the laptop refuces to load windows. I can't use a DOS boot CD either. Instead the laptop displays the following message: " FATAL ERROR !!! Please change CPU!!!"

I know that this Gasteway support Turion X2. So my question is: Is the TL50 I have is faulty?

    thanks

Its either the BIOS or the motherboard which is not supporting a dual-core CPU....

Both support the dual-core. I checked it and double checked it before posting this thread.
    So, Is the TL50 faulty?

Have you checked to see if a bios update is needed!

Why dont you contact gateway and ask them if the motherboard is the same..!!

When I had to upgrade my Acer 3680, it had 5 different models (in the Acer 3680 family), and Acer told me that the 5 different models had the same motherboards with 3 different chipsets among them, and the chipset my laptop had did not support C2Ds..!!

I check the Gateway website, the picture of the motherboard used in the MX3410 is the same as mine. In addition the bios in both cases is the same. So I sure my laptop supports Turion X2.
Besides the TL50 is showing correctly in the Bios. If it was not supported the computer wouldn't have started in the first place.

Note: Angad1608 mate a piece of advice never ever trust what the technical support tells you.
What's the chipset in your laptop? and what C2D where you trying to upgrade to?

My laptop had the dreaded i940 which needed one jumper to be hacked in order to enable it to support C2Ds....
My laptops comes in 3 variants, with i940, i943 and the i945gm..!! The i940 does support C2Ds, since my fried has got some HP laptop with a C2D in it and the chipset is an i940..!! It actually depends upon the manufacturer which features they want to be enabled or disabled on the chipset..
Check out the Acer forum, there is a massive thread on all this..!! :D

You could try out the TL-52, if you could find a cheap one..!! It might help you to clear your doubts.. :)

So if I am understanding you right. Your laptop ships with the latest bios? So there is no newer bios on the Gateway site?

Just out of curiosity, did you tighten the screw on the cpu zif socket (S1)?
If you do not lock the processor in with the screw, it may not be properly recognized. If it still doesnt work, it looks like your system doesnt support the faster amd.
I also doubt the MX3410 and the Ml3108b are the same. They may look the same from a picture, but their is obviously a difference in them, since the Tl-50 works in one, but not the other.

    More details about the hack

I'm not doubting you. I'm curious and like to know how things can be haked and modded.

That's right. The bios I have is offered as an upgrade for the Gateway MX3410 and MX3418 and the eMachine N-10, N-12, N14 though.

    yes.

How can you explain that the bios in my laptop is offered as an upgrade for the MX3410 and MX3418?

Besides the TL50 I tested an MK36. The MK36 works but only if I put ram in slot2. If I put ram in the slot1 the laptop turns On but refuses to boot.
