I have connected an external monitor and picture there is fine. I have stripped the laptop down and checked all the connectors and no luck. I am 99% sure this is a problem with the LCD itself, but just want that extra 1%.

    Thanks!

Looks like there is an issue with the connector/inverter. Looks dead to me!

With cases like this there is always a small chance its the GPU whether its integrated or discrete. HOWEVER, by looking at the way its lined, etc, id say the connector/inverter is dead.

Connector maybe as I've never seen a laptop with a broken connector.
It's definitely not an inverter. When the inverter is faulty you get a dim/dark picture.

it might be dead GPU or screen but usually it would be dead GPU... and OP , is that a picture of the laptop connected to the external monitor or is it the laptop screen? If its also on the external monitor , its a dead GPU... if its not on the external monitor , than u have a dead screen.
