    Is this a realistic price?

So my friend is looking to sell his old Dell. I'm not 100% sure on specs, but it's enormous, looks business class, has 512MB of RAM, a P4, pretty sure under 2GHz, and a HDD under 100GB. He thinks he can get $500 for it, and is thinking about buying a new HDD to upgrade the machine with. I think he'll be lucky to get half that much, and that he'd get less for the HDD upgrade then he would spend on the new drive. What do you guys think?

Uh no, that price is not realistic. That notebook is a relic, nothing more. He'll be lucky to get $200 for it. Personally, I would just sell that thing on e-Bay for parts as quickly as possible and not even worry about trying to upgrade the hard drive in it. By the sound of it, it appears he'll spend more on a PATA replacement hard drive than what he could sell the entire notebook for.

In any event, trying to upgrade the notebook to make it more "sellable" is just not going to work in this case because all the replacement parts to make this machine better are deprecated beyond belief.

Get a specific model, it will make a huge difference.

I just gave away a Compaq Evo N610c (business class) with a 2.0GHz P4-M and 512MB of RAM... for free.
I valued the laptop at $150.
I suspect the laptop you described is also in the $100-200 range.

If it's an XPS m170, it's probably worth around $400. Anything else is worth less.

lots of 9100s for sale for around 100, the 9400's are had easily for 250-375, but the 9400 sounds much larger than what was originally posted as they wouldnt have 512 ram and are dual core machines

lol. Yeah... I kinda figured he was quite rediculously out of line with reality. Oh well. He won't listen to what I say... i expect to see him sorely disappointed.

    Edit: Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a 9100.

I just worked on an Inspiron 9100, needed a power jack replaced.
What a piece of crap. I value the system at $100, he can get $200-300 if he works hard to sell it on eBay or craigslist.

$150 is actually the price that I would put on it as well.

He's almost better off harvesting the parts and pawning them off to the highest bidders. You can pick up 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD laptops these days at $400. Slap your friend across the face for me?
