Hi everyone. What a superb website this is.

Unfortunately, my processor knowledge, particularly AMD, is somewhat lacking. Despite googling I have not found the answers I am looking for. Hoping someone can help.

Is this a good current processor for a notebook?

    AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58

and how does it compare to a current Intel Core 2 Duo?

    Many thanks

That's a good processor, the latest most advanced notebook CPU by AMD. They are a bit lacking compare to C2Duo, but by not much, and you won't notice it unless you benchmark the two together.

Depends on your usage. The TL-58 would be more than powerful enough for basic windows based tasks like office, internet, email and IM. It should be good for gaming too but far from the best. The latest Core 2 Duos will be far more powerful for the latest games and cpu intensive work like encoding and serious photoshopping. If you're gaming primarily it'll be ok but a Core 2 Duo would be better.

For gaming the GPU is usually more important, but straight comparison, go Core 2 Duo.

I think your referring to the AMD Turion X2's in general. The highest end one is the TL-66, but the TL-58 is a good processor.

Core 2 Duo beats all, that said this is as good as anything else or better. It will do anything and everthing out there maybe not as fast as C2D but most people doing most things could not tell the diff, you can encode, photoshop it will be just a little slower, better than anything on the cunsumer market b/4about a 1 1/2 to 2 years ago including Desktop CPU's.

You're being way to general about this. You can't compare brands, only individual processors. With a Core2Duo and a Turion X2 running at the same clock, the Core2Duo usually wins in benchmarks and performance. The clock speed is still important and shouldn't be ignored.

Don't you think that is a given? I think what I said is correct if people use a little common sense in understanding what I said. And you are saying back to me what I said and yes I can compare brands because w/commonsense some things are a given and sad to say the world does have generalities and they can be useful to understand. ;)
