Whenever my notebook battery nears the 10% mark, it will increase in heat and within 5 minutes, it will lose power and shut off suddenly. The battery gauge still shows that there are around 4%-11% charge left when i turn it back on. There are signs that there is battery wear (20%), but is it normal? Will it end up heating up and explode?

Maybe in Power Options you have it set to shut down after the battery reaches 10%.

It's not that. It's the battery that heats up when nearing 10%, and just loses power around 10%. Is there a risk that can be taken? Given some battery explodes after heating up.
