Is this of any use?

Well I am having the laptop in my sig . If I replace the processor T5300,1.73 GHz, 2 MB Cache, 533 MHz FSB with the T7600,2.33 GHz,4MB Cache,667 MHz FSB, is it going to be worth it? I was thinking about it since I was getting around 15 fps in GTA 4 on 800x600,textures and render at medium.

 

I'm surprised GTA4 even runs on that I got about the same specs as you want. So i could always try GTA 4 for you, as i also have Go 7600, but i have T7600.. i had a T5600 before (1.83Ghz 2MB)..

I'll try it out for ya if you want But i have to clean up some space for it i see That game is huge!

 

I had a T5300 in my Dell E1505, and upgrading to the T7400 really decreased rendering times pretty substantially. I do not game, but I know GTA 4 is very CPU intensive, so upgrading the cpu should help out.
I wouldnt bother looking for a T7600. The T7400 is pretty much the same speed, but has like a quarter of the price tag

I'm not even sure it would work....the mismatch in front speed bus might result in the faster cpu slowing down to run at 533mgthz, or it might result in it not working at all.

Furthermore, I would worry about the additional heat the cpu would kick out--your laptop is already on the list of laptops that HP offers an extra extended warranty on it due to system failures that many people suspect results from gpu overheating--

--adding a hotter cpu to this laptop screams bad idea to me.

 

My laptop runs at 5:8 fsb:dramratio togheter with my cpu, so it runs properly, maybe his laptop does the same

However, heat shouldn't be a problem here. My previous T5600 ran hotter than my T7600, they have the same TDP, so they should be equally hot.

 

Perhaps, but is your laptop on the list of known bad laptops? Given HPs solution is a bios fix that underclocks you GPU to bring down the temp a couple of degrees, I would be hesitant to be doing anything out of spec.

According to the service manual, the laptop's top available cpu is the t7200, but it does look like the chipset supports the faster fsb

 

Thanks to all who replied. Yeah, my laptop has the i945PM chipset supporting a maximum of 667 MHz frequency. So even the RAM(667 MHz) functions in 533 MHz frequency because of the FSB of the CPU .And yes, the motherboard fried once and HP repaired it for free. Just a couple of days back, they also extended the warranty for 2 more years. So willing to know the results before trying.

T7200, T7400, and T7600 should run without any problem in your system.

As mentioned about the temperature, the die size of the T7x00 merom chips is much larger than the T5x00 chips, which is larger than the T2xxx yonah chips.The larger the contact area between the cpu and the heatsink, the better the heat energy will be transferred, thus the cpu will run cooler dispite the higher clock speed.

Thanks to all of you guys. It is really encouraging to know that the T7600 will produce lesser heat than the T5300 because of its higher die size. Just had a curious question:
How does the T7600 compare with the latest CPUs like P8400 and P8600?

 

Per Mhz clock speed the Merom 4M T7600 will be as fast as a 2.33Ghz santa rosa/monteveina cpu.
So a T7600 is very similar in clock speed to a T7700, T8300, P8400.

The T7600 does use more power than the T5300, however the surface area between the cpu and heatsink is larger on the T7600, so it is more efficient at conducting the heat away from the processor.
