@hmscott I undervolted and still the thing Idles @ 98 deg. C![]()
How do I fix this? Disabling Turbo? Because my 6700HQ is turbo-ing to 3.1 Ghz while running the antivirus background task and some other normal services. I think I might need a repaste after all...

Are you sure there isn't something running in the background?
You've got a serious cooling problem if you are idling that high, and undervolting can't help with that. If you said "idle" 98c before sorry I missed that, I assumed that was under full load testing.
IDK if only re-paste can even help with that, there might be another cooling component failure involved, but if you are outside warranty then I'd start with re-pasting. If you haven't done it before see if the place you originally purchased it can do the work for you.
Update: Your posts only gave temperature, you didn't say while @ idle... that's an important detail...and you mixed reports on 6700HQ and 6820HK, so which is getting that high at Idle? You've said both @ 98c temperature, with the 6700HQ that high at idle... what about the 6820HK, is it 98c @ idle or under load?
Which model laptops are these CPU's in, you said Clevo was the make for both?. Have these ever been repasted? How old are they, is there any warranty coverage, is your seller still around?

@hmscott Sorry to be confusing. Only my 6700HQ machine in my signature seems to reach 75-98° at idle (Idle as in no user programs running, just hardware drivers, windows services, antimalware, and a few non-intensive background services). My 6820HK is way better at idle and with16 tabs of chrome and GIMP running. I achieved -150.4 mV on that (6820HK) machine, but stability has not been thoroughly tested. Back on my 6700HQ machine, I shut off some services and disabled all start-up programs except Realtek audio drivers and something about Clevo BIOS, there are only necessary services such as the Intel HD Graphics Drivers, NVIDIA Drivers, Networking, Clevo BIOS thing, Storage Drivers and Synaptics Services. Both are similar chassis, the Clevo P640RE for the 6820HK system and P640RF for the 6700HQ system, the P640RE was repasted a few months ago and the P640RF has not been repasted since I got it.. The P640RE's 6820HK can handle a sustained load @ around 89 degrees with a -150.4 mV undervolt but again, that remains untested and I'll be tweaking that machine further and as for the P640RF's 6700HQ, it can't handle anything, exceeding 80° all the time. These machines as old as their release dates and out of warranty. Yes, my seller is still around.
EDIT: Fan profile at idle is automatic.

At least you have had 2 systems to optimize your undervolting skillz.
So it looks like repaste on at least the 6700HQ with 98c "idle", but the 6820HK at 89c load is probably near best with it's recent "repaste".
And, you were right the first time, all applications exited and no background services running is "Idle", both for "Idle" temperature and undervolt "Idle" testing it's important to be actually "Idle" for them to be accurately done.
You need to not have Chrome running wih apps open, as Chrome will allow sites to refresh pages and run jscript / advertising / gif's while open, so that's not "idle":
"My 6820HK is way better at idle and with 16 tabs of chrome and GIMP running." <= Not "Idle"
As far as too many posts, we are helping you get your laptops tuned, and that's useful forward progress. Keep up the good work.michealscott likes this. -
@hmscott I got a 140.6 mV undervolt on my 6820HK machine. Prime95 is stable. Idle testing pending. I could go lower to 150.4 mV but I prefer to stay on the stable side and since I have hit the point of diminishing results earlier at about -125 mV, I really don't care. Lol.
Undervolting Stability Tests @ -140.6 mV
- Prime95
- Small FFT 15 min: PASSED, 0 ERRORS, 0 WARNINGS
- 1344K FFT 15 min: PASSED, 0 ERRORS, 0 WARNINGS
- Blend 15 min: PASSED, 0 ERRORS, 0 WARNINGS
Max Temp: 88 deg. C, Full fans
CPU package @ Normal Usage: 55 deg. C, Fans off.
Thanks for the help! -

Your 6700HQ machine might need a proper thermal paste application (and possibly a clean up of the internals from dust - fans especially).
That (and inappropriate use of a laptop - such as in your lap, or on the bed, etc. where airflow is obstructed) seems like more obvious things to look at/for.michealscott and hmscott like this. -

I should point out that the 6700HQ has IC Diamond not factory paste.

That's why I don't suggest embarking on re-pasting as it starts a long chain of events that eventually puts someone in a bad situation - needing a repaste and they can't do it themselves or afford to have someone else do it for them. Usually this is the 2nd owner.
If this happens to the 1st owner they often sell it rather than redo the paste themselves or pay someone else to do it, and the problem get's passed on to unsuspecting buyers.
Always a good thing to ask when checking out a potential used laptop purchase - "did you or anyone else including the original seller re-paste this laptop with enthusiast paste, and how long ago was this done?"
It can be 3 months to a year repeating cycle typically before another re-pasting needs to be done due to rising temperatures.
Head's up, it's a PIA once you've started down that path, especially if you had the seller do it for you, now you need to do it yourself or pay someone else to do it for you.michealscott likes this. -

Is undervolting dangerous?
