Where can I get a Japanese keyboard for a HP Pavilion dv7t (bronze w/ 9600m), and would it still work as a US keyboard for when I'm not typing Japanese? In otherwords, can I go into the Keyboard settings in Vista and change it to Japanese when I need to type Japanese and leave it in US mode whenever else? I would just use IME, but I would like to have a Japanese keyboard that way a Japanese friend of mine can also use it (he is used to Japanese keyboards).

This is a silly question from a guy who isn't familiar with japanese - but are the number of keys and layout the same? I'd think the two would not be compatable on the same keyboard, just because a diff. number or layout would be required...

why don't you just install the japanese keyboard layout?
It uses the same physical keyboard, according to a few pictures:

Not sure if they make one you can use to replace your laptop's model, but you could certainly find a USB model and just attach it when he wanted to use it. You do release that nearly everything else like your office program, broswer, games, etc. will still be in english, right?
Yes, it could be used as in QWERTY when you felt like it as they almost always double-print the two options over each other. Might want to set a keyboard shortcut to avoid the control panel. -
I currently live in Japan and I don't have any computers which use Japanese keyboard layout. But I still can type in Japanese hiragana, katakana, or kanji.
The three notebooks that I own have US layout keyboards. I just installed the Japanese Input in the O/S, which in Vista it's located in Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Keyboards and Languages > Change keyboards... > Add.. > Japanese Microsoft IME.
To switch input languanges just access the Language Bar which can be docked in the taskbar (preferred), floating on desktop or hidden as you can also use shortcut keys for switching input if you like. -

I can type katakana and hiragana with a normal English keyboard with the support of Japanese input.
