I've been outta the loop for a while on hardware and I've never quite understood the newer architectures. My p4 runs at 3.0 ghz. Would my processor outperform a 2.66 Core i7 on single threaded apps, or are the new architectures efficient enough to accomplish more at lower clock speeds?
-
Newer CPUs are far superior in terms of efficiency (work done per same clock speed). The i7 even at half that speed would beat the P4.
-
Any new processor on the market is better than the pentium 4.
A Intel Atom which is a <10watt processor will beat a Pentium 4.
Technology had advanced quite alot since the reign of the penitum 4. Now you need to look at more than just clock speed to determine overall performance.

Yup. Dual core Atoms are more powerful than all but the top end single core P4's.
-
I feels ad thinking that a netbook is able to beat my old Athlon 3700+ and 9600GT rig in pure processing power XD

Londez, its like comparing V6 cars now versus the V6(or even V10!) cars of the 1960s. Back in the 1960s, even the so-called "high-performance" sports cars made by Porsche and like had 60-80 horsepower, a figure which is exceeded by the lowest of the lowest cars and is in the motorcycle range.
The P4 has high frequency, but it can't do a lot per frequency. Back when Core 2 came out, a single core Core 2 performed as well as dual core or dual processor Pentium 4 did in very well threaded applications! Core i7 is far faster than the original Core 2.
I'm pretty sure that a Arrandale(mobile dual core based on i7) that's clocked at 1.33GHz will be able to beat 3GHz P4 in most single threaded apps even without Turbo Mode. -
Totally disagree with both of you. I don't think that a single core or a dual core atom can beat a P4.. the only thing they can beat a P4 at is power consumption.
-
Someone should just Google some benchmarks.
-
As you wish.. (PassMark Score (higher is better) - Passmark CPU bechmarks)
Low end
Intel Atom Z520 @ 1.33GHz = 253
Intel Pentium 4 1.40GHz = 178
High End
Intel Atom 330 @ 1.6GHZ = 620
Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.80GHz = 615 -
If you don't know what you are talking about and are unwilling to search for the information, please don't post.

I was referring to Sean. I can Google just fine, but thanks for the numbers nonetheless.
-
Ah, I see now, with the little emoticon.
At least it's settled!
-
Passmark is inaccurate... we needs some other real benchmarks! Don't know why you ppl always insist on using passmark..
-
I linked to a whole bunch of Atom and Pentium 4 processor benchmarks. You obviously don't even care about the truth.
-
Your benchmarks only seem to show max oc and power usage...,
-
They categories of CPU. One being Atom, the other socket 775 Pentium 4, from where you can browse the benchmarks for any of those processors. Click on the names of the different processors to go to benchmarks for each one. Many are overclocked, but there are plenty of stock ones to compare.
-
Are we seriously arguing over which CPU sucks worse?
-
Yes, LOL..
-
A single core i7 is probably 2x; 2,5x a P4
-
I thought all Core i7s are quad cores?
-
No, the new Arrandale i7s are dual cores (Q1 2010).
-
I was only comparing a single core working in a non-multithreaded application, sorry for confusion.
Like sgogeta4 says they will be 2 and 4 cores. At least for now. -
I think that he was talking about desktop core i7s...at first
Just curious about the new CPUs, have some questions
