Seems like a lot of people have been trying to find these without luck. From what I understand, they just got publicly released to retailers for consumer purchase last week. I ordered mine from a retailer that showed a large inventory of them, it shipped, and then they pulled the item from their site... Weird. Anyway, I think you can find them in stock at Newegg. I'm the first person I know of to have this in hand, exciting times.

It will be going in an MSI GS70 Stealth Pro w/ GTX 970m this week after that arrives. Been out of the PC game for a minute, so if anyone could tell me the best benchmarking procedures and anything you specifically want to see, let me know.

Update it to the current firmware version Samsung offers.

Install about 20GB of static files (any files; type does not matter). Do not modify these files or copy/move them around after first install.

On or around May 10, 2015, run the following utility (see link below) SSD Read Speed Tester to see what the read speed on old files is.

Hope/pray it is not affected like the other TLC Samsung junk nand.

    See:
    http://www.overclock.net/t/1512915/...es-benchmarks-needed-to-confirm-affected-ssds

Any other test is... yawn! Boring... :)

Considering the differences between regular NAND and 3D NAND, combined with the fact that it uses 40nm NAND, I *highly* doubt the 850 EVO will be affected by the same slowdown issues affecting the 840/840 EVO.

Of course, it is also the very first SSD to use TLC V-NAND, so who knows what other issues might show up down the road. I'd be willing to gamble on the 850 EVO not being affected by the read-speed-slowdown issue, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to gamble on it not having any other issues.

Considering that the original 840 (TLC based) Samsung SSD along with the 840 EVO lines have this issue, it wouldn't surprise me if the next gen sTLC (Samsung TLC) based SSD's continue with the same issues as this is at this time a strictly Samsung phenomenon. ;)

To think that the type of nand is the issue is simply a guess. The faulty firmware and Samsung's lack of grasping that interaction is a more likely scenario.

After all, nand properties have been ironed out or at least understood for a long time. Firmware is where errors can creep in easily.

Congrats with one of the fastest, if not the fastest, SSD out there :)

mSATA TLC is nowhere close to the fastest SSD available.

    # of controller channels (8 or more) + # of nand packages + Optimal Interleaving of nand and packages + Optimized controller = Fast SSD.

mSATA is not in the running in all areas except maybe the controller part.

Not to mention the latencies which sTLC introduces.

Well... I doubt even if I write that down on a calendar I'll remember or be very inspired to do that in several months... but maybe!

I'm clearly less well informed on the inner workings of SSD's, so I'll let you all decide what is technically/theoretically the best, but not too worried about it being junk as I'm coming from a stone age spinning drive that's barely hanging on by a thread. I decided to buy this largely based off of the 850 EVO (SATA) benchmark averages on SSD UserBenchmark. Can't wait to get it in my computer!

This is not a matter of just 'technically or theoretically the best'.

Read the thread I linked. The drive can go to below 1999 4200 RPM standards (20MB/s).

Myself? I would be returning this (unopened) to give Samsung a kick where it counts; their bottom line.

Yeah, sight unseen and without having the patience or the faith that this model will be immune.

Keep in mind the original Samsung non-EVO 840 took almost a year to show this slow read of old files behavior.

    Good luck.

The thread did help inspire me a little bit more to test it as you said. Looks like the normal SATA 850 EVO is getting good results so far. When I bought it, being a semi-new model, I realized there could be all kinds of issues, so I'm prepared to be a guinea pig. Already opened so I'm stuck now :)
    Thanks for the info!

You're welcome. Just keep in mind that if you don't use the specially made utility from that thread you may never see a 'bad' benchmark score. That is because most benchmarks write new data and read it back, therefore the issue is bypassed.

The SSD Read Speed Tester actually reads the data already on the drive and if it shows that older data is getting slower... well, someone is getting... equivalent to 'If you were attached to another object, by an incline plane, wrapped helically around an axis'*. :)

    Huh I didn't know this existed. Is there a 1TB 850 EVO?

I checked for myself, Samsung is taking preorders on the mSATA variant. It should be released in April.
