Turned the laptop on, Windows finds drivers for the Hard Drive and informs me that the drivers have been installed. I go to My Computer and don't see the new drive. I restarted the laptop and checked My Computer again, still no drive. I checked in device manager and the drive shows up there, says the device is functioning, and an attempted driver update says that the drivers are up to date. Now what?

For reference the drive is a Hitachi HTS542516K9SA00

Edit: a google search told me I need to partition and assign a drive letter to the drive. I tried this and get the error "The operation cannot be completed becauce the disk is not initialized."

Edit #2: ahah! lol I've gone and solved this problem on my own... or so I think. Disk is currently formatting. In the Computer Management window I had to right click the drive and initialize it. Then I right clicked the area that shows the partitions on the disk and made a simple volume. When it's finished formatting I'll see if it works.

Well i was going to tell you to right click on My computer and enter the manage sections, but it looks like you've got it all figured out.

Just remember to initialize the drive after its all said and done and you should be up and running.

I had just finished typing out the instruction when you updated
    =)

    Glad you got it working.
Quick question, did you have to buy anything else to add the second drive to the 1720? I am thinking about getting one and I already have a drive to use for the secondary. I wasn't sure if you needed anything else.

Yes you need to get a hard drive caddy designed specifically for the second HD slot of an Inspiron 1720 (Vostro 1700 is the same thing I think), a connector thingy, and screws. I got all of this packaged together from Ebay for about $35 shipped.
