Assuming minimal price difference, which of these SODIMM modules would be faster/more reliable in a laptop which supports 1866Mz SODIMMs - Kingston HyperX Cas 10 1866Mhz vs Crucial Ballistix Sport Cas 9 1600Mhz?

This will be for a 2x8Gb matched pair (I need 16Gb for VMs etc.)

This is for a machine with a i7-4720HQ CPU

From what I read 1866 is for OC and 1600 is for standard...so if your CPU can't OC I would stick with 1600.

Indeed.. I believe that the 4720HQ can't OC RAM etc unlike the 4790K in batman hence 1866MHz RAM is pointless.. Get whatever's cheaper.. And if you really don't care about saving a few dollars, I would get the Kingston Hyper X Impact.. Lifetime warranty etc :D

I've seen certain configurations of the laptop I'm looking at (Clevo P650SE) offered with 1866Mz RAM, so I assume that it can work with this? If so, would I need to buy RAM advertised as 1866Mz to get that speed?

The BIOS options are what will allow higher than the nominal RAM speed/settings.

Buying the best example of a component may not give you much performance gain in your specific system and/or workflows, especially where RAM is concerned. But buying the lowest common denominator will guarantee you the lowest possible performance from your system and if you happen to upgrade the RAM SoDimms at any point in the future for this system, it will also prove to be the costlier option too.

For a minimal $$ difference; buy the better parts.

The clevo P650 can run RAM even above 2133 mhz so definetly can handle 1866

    @Oxford_Guy

Yes , the 2133 hyperx impact is very good. I was considering it also but the difference in price put me off.

I had some bad experiences with corsair Ram in the past(2 consecutive batches I bought and returned because they where giving errors in Memtest) so I'm not touching corsair anymore

As someone said before the Bios is the one to determine the max ram frequency and Prema confirmed that the Bios in p650 accepts upt to 2667 Ram.

Htwingnut has 2133mhz ram in his laptop and it works fine

Okay, thanks! The dabs price seems pretty good (about the same as 1600Gz HyperX if I configure the laptop build from the supplier with that), so I may just get the laptop supplier to put in the minimum 4GB RAM and change it myself.

BTW should a Clevo P650SE be able to utilise 2133 mhz RAM without changing the stock (in this case XMG) bios?

Nowhere is it mentioned that you need a modded bios to use higher specced ram

You need Prema BIOS to use timings above 1600MHz.. 1866MHz RAM works but runs at 1600MHz speed unless you OC it using Prema BIOS..

Oh really? Would this also be the case for 2133Mhz RAM?

2133MHz might not work.. 1866MHz is garunteed usually... I'm just not sure that the 4720HQ can use OCed RAM..

Okay, might be safest for me to go with the 1866Mhz option then, unless Dabs are nice about returns

    16Gb of 2133Mhz RAM is £32 (!) more on Amazon.co.uk

Think I'll play it (relatively) safe and just get 1866Mhz RAM from Dabs
