Hello, i was wondering, if your laptop supports max 8gb memory for example, and one of your dimm slots burns out and you are forced just to use one, can you put 1x8gb module and it will work ?

Yes, i mean.......... max 8gb means total installed memory supported by chipset, so 2x4gb=8gb(is normally max) or 1x8gb doesn't matter ? will my laptop recognize one 8GB module (MSI GX740)?

Probably, but 8GB modules cost like $300 each.

Yes, you can but then you'll lose some memory bandwidth due to it only running in single-channel mode. Other than that your wallet will suffer too considering how much more expensive 8GB SODIMM's are over 4GB equivalents.

If one of my RAM slots break, I would rather use 4GB ram than buy a 8GB ram module for 600-700$. Most programs will not need more than 4GB anyway.

Wow, 8GB SODIMMs are crazy expensive. Can't find any on Newegg either. What gives?

Nice having 4 slots on a laptop :) Mine actually supports 32GB but you have to get those crazy expensive 8GB chips that combined would cost more than the laptop!

There is a reason proper workstation machines have such a high build quality, because components like the ram and the cost of the software dwarf the price of the machine, so you may as well make it decent lol.

Even though specs say maximum 4GB per slot, that's only because what they tested it at. Lots of times as RAM prices drop, as they have with it lately, users are able to put in higher than spec'ed memory. Many users here even put 8GB in their machines when it claimed max 4GB RAM.
