I hope this is in the right section of the forum. Please advise me if it is not.
Hey everyone. I have come across some extra money and I am in need of a new screen to view my movies and games. However I thought it might be more cost effective to get a projector and white screen.
First of all let me explain the projected area of usage for the screen & projector. I have space for an 80" (diagonal measurement) projector screen on my wall with appr. 12ft from the front to back wall where the projector will be placed.
[visual of room]
Back Wall...........................................................Front Wall
|[projector]-----------------12ft-----------[screen]|
I plan to view some Hi-Def games and movies on my PS3 on the screen and if its possible hook up a PC/notebook to the projector for Movie viewing as well.
But I have a few questions to ask because I've never owned a projector before.
1. What is a good brand to buy? (good warranty, bulb replacements, reliability, etc.)
2. What are the major differences between LCD and DLP projectors?
3. Would DLP or LCD be more suitable for the given space in the room?
4. What would be a good native resolution to go for to get the best (and most cost effective) viewing experience of DVD's and Hi-Def movies/games.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I dont own my own projector, but we have EIKI and Luxeon projectors at college, and the Luxeon ones are far better.
Stay away from the no name brands cause they burn out really quick.
Mitsubishi and Dell make fairly good projectors from my experience with using them at high school
Projectors can be really expensive, and the bulbs can be like $300 or more, so look up how much the bulbs cost, so you get an idea of the long time price the unit is going to cost.
Also you will need a good set of blinds for the windows, to get the best image from the projector.
Dark rooms are always better for having a projector.
Make sure the projector has plenty of room around it, cause they can get hot, and they need plenty of air for circulation
Sorry I cant be of more help, hopefully someone else can chime in

You were the best help I've had so far!
I was thinking about getting a dell, while they're not the top of the line brand, I can usually find good support and prices with them. But I will also check out Mitsubishi.
Also my blinds are a sold pull down one (much like a projector screen hah.) but I can make the room very dark even during the day.
Thanks for the response K-Tron
