Is it a gimmick, or will it actually help clean off the screen without scratching?

I have sticky stuff from post-it notes on my screen, that I can't get off it water. (Because most women are clueless  )

I don't know about PostIt residue but I use screen cleaner from Monster Cable and it works very well. It removes oily finger print from my screen.

The only cleaning materials you need are water and a microfiber cloth. You may also use any citrus based solvent diluted with water to get the residue off your screen.

    microfiber + rubbing alcohol ftw

only use the alcohol if you have something on there that a dry cloth wont remove.

Microfiber works great. Try window cleaning/overhead cleaning solution. The stuff you use to clean whiteboards.

As long as the solution is free of ammonia, it should be good.

I wouldn't recommend citrus based solvent to clean a laptop screen. May be the chassis but not the screen. The citrus based solvent may damage anti reflective coating of the screen.

I agree with hendra, Monster screenclean with a lint free cloth cleans brilliantly, use it in work to clean everything including sticker residue off pretty much everything

I used Nice N' Clean "Electronic Wipes". They work great. However, before I tested these out on an old laptop, I would only use water and a microfiber cloth.

As for cleaners being a gimmick, alot of cleaners advertise as being "anti-static" which from experience, provides a bit of protection temporarily from dust and other particulates which accumulate on your screen.

    Exactly ^

And use at your own risk as well. I have seen some horror stories involving the chassis and alcohol. With the screen you will be safe, but if you decide the chassis needs a wipedown, stick with water.

    Hydro pump! BOOOOM!

Basically, I used a slightly wet cloth to clean the LCD a few times.
After its dry, I use spectacles cleaning cloth to sweep it.
    Clean and Clear. Cheer!

    +1.
I use it on all my screens. No streaking and very screen safe. Alcohol can yellow the screen over time.

A tad expensive but worth it. The kit should lats several years with weekly cleanings. If you need another cloth, any microfiber cloth will work. The important thing is that it's microfiber. Link.

I am using "3M Notebook Screen Cleaning Wipes" and it works really well. Nothing fancy though, lint-free cloth + isopropyl alcohol + water.

Isopropyl is ok? I always thought it damages the reflective coating.
