 I will explain it the best i can.

it is a hp pavilion zv6000 and its about 1 1/2 years old. my brother in law really never took care of it. anyway when the lcd is working fine there are 4 vertical lines on the right side of it. which we got used to already..they are all right next to each other so it don't bother us too much.

when we restart it or turn it off and then back on again........sometimes the screen does not work.....all we see are black spots, lines running vertically and horizontally. sometimes we will tap the screen and it will work fine......but sometimes it will not work. we have to restart it and sometimes that will work but most of the time we have to restart it many times or keep tapping it hard or just keep messing with the lcd to make it work.

what can i do? i was told at best buy it might be the connections. i need to know if it something i can fix. I am very familiar with building, fixing, etc desktops....but have never opened a notebook. Help me out here? thanks.

Sounds like a faulty or loose LCD Cable. Some HP notebooks come with fairly detailed disassembly instructions. I believe they are usually on the Drivers and manual disc that comes with the notebook. It may show how to reseat that LCD cable.
