I recently bought a used Sony Z1 laptop, and after a couple of weeks I noticed what look like "dirty" spot inside the lcd panel. I'm not 100% sure they were not there before, but I feel like I would have seen them right away. The curious thing is that they appeared soon after I had taken the laptop to work inside my messenger bag, which has magnetic clasps to hold the main flap shut. The location of the magnets seem to line up to where the majority of these dark spots are in relation to how the laptop rests in the bag. However, there are several smaller and less noticeable ones elsewhere on the screen. The spots look very irregular and do not appear to be any kind of burn-in. I've included a link to some pics.

Is it possible that this kind of discoloration could've been caused by magnetic fields? I'd like to find out before using the bag again and doing more damage.
Thanks,

Try massaging the dark spots with your finger. Press enough that the screen "ripples" just a little bit. Some times this can bring those pixels back. Don't do it for too long but if it does work you should be able to see it.

Magnetic forces dont apply to LCD's, more likely is the pressure from the clamps themselves. I have had some pretty strong neo magnets from HD's near LCDs without any distortion.

Ah, i was think about HD's. Woah, my bad.

Also, I am not talking about magnets during normal HD operation, but magnets from old HD's that I use to hold up papers and stuff

Magnet wont affect an LCD, if there was something else inside of there that it effected who knows.
They look like spots where pressure had been on the screen to me. -
Thanks for the replies. Yeah, everything ive read seems to support the fact that LCDs are not affected by mangets. The clamps are not putting pressure on the laptop, just holding the outer flap of the bag shut. I only had it in there about 8hrs and it sat next to my desk the whole time (no chance of any rough handling). Before and after that it's been on my desk and hardly used. I talked to the previous owner (good friend of mine) and he doesn't remember any such spots, but says it's possible they were there before. However we both doubt that's the case since we're both hyper-aware of such stuff. Now I'm paranoid about putting any laptop in that bag!!!

did you leave it in a car or something where it could have been around high temperatures?
-
No, it's not been in any vehicle for any length of time, or otherwise exposed to any high tempuratures. Is it possible that there may have been some kind of metallic dust or debris built up inside the edges of panel which the magnets "pulled" to the surface? Seems like a stretch I know. -

It looks like pressure marks to me. I had an old Toshiba with them.
-
Does your LCD ripple easily if you apply pressure to the back of the screen?
-
I would have to agree with pressure damage. I currently attend high school and I've seen graphing calculators that have big dark spots on the LCD screens from being in backpacks. Also, a lot of our school laptops have bright circular spots from, again, being put in backpacks with lots of textbooks. Hope this helps.
