i am running a Gateway MP6954. the problem occurs after extended use, always while running a program. It could be due to overheating because usually it happens when the entire laptop feels very warm. basically very dark lines appear across the entire screen and the computer freezes up, not allowing me to check system processes. also on a rare occasion when i start up the laptop the screen will not turn on. this is very rare. is there a common fix to these monitor related issues or will it require some more in depth work to fix. i have also noticed there is a hardware part for laptops called an LCD inverter, usually sold as a replacement. would that be worth looking into, and does installation require a technician and pricey fee? thank you for any feedback or input :)

Try it with a laptop cooler or with a fan on the laptop with plenty of clear space below. If that works then get a can of compressed air and blow in thru the exhaust vents while the laptop is off. If a lot of dusct comes out that the exhaust vent may have been plugged up. If problem persist, then it might be your GPU going bad (or I have seen a few cases of poorly applied heatsink compound drying up and separating between the GPU and the heatsink.
