I recently set my LCD screen for my Dell e1405 (samsung LCD) to turn off on battery mode when there has been no activity for 1 minute. Basically when I'm in class, it'll turn on and off a lot (it acutally saves quite a bit of battery this way, that's why I did it).

Is having my LCD frequently switching between on and off all the time bad for it?

More than likely, no. The cold-cathode lights they use for LCD backlights don't fail in the same manner that incandescents do. They're more tied to total time running than on-off cycles, I believe, because they don't have the temperature fluctuations that incandescents do.
