When I first got my computer the LCD would shut off whenever I closed the lid (actually it would go to stand by). This, I believe, is normal operation. After about a month it stopped shutting the LCD off or going to standby. I don’t necessarily want it to go to standby, but I’d like to have the monitor shut off when I close the lid. I’ve tried everything from flashing the most recent BIOS from MSI, to checking and unchecking most all options in the “Power Options” control panel. I am out of ideas, and am not sure what the problem could be.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is it possible that the hardware switch has malfunctioned? Is there such a switch (I’m not sure, but I assume)?

I appreciate any help possible! :)

what options did you "check" and "uncheck" in the Power Options?

the place where i configure my notebook lid options is a dropdown box, not checkboxes.

Are you sure that the screen presses the switch upon closing? Try pressing the switch with a finger - if the LCD goes black, then it's working. It may or may not go to standby (depending on the Power Oprions) but the LCD must turn off when you press the switch

Well, checked and unchecked was more of a figure of speech than anything. However I did try both "do nothing" and "standby" in the close lid dropdown.

As far as the switch....as far as I can tell there isn't an exterior, accessible switch on this notebook. I know that on some there is a small switch that is depressed when the lid closes. But there is no such thing that I can test on this laptop. I assume it is somewhere I cannot find or press with my finger. I prefer not to hav that little switch, on my old Dell it just begs to be broken off.

are you running any kind of software that controls power schemes? like RM Clock or similar. does your vendor provide some type of app similar to dell's quickset that lets to quickly change between pre-set power saving/performance schemes?

i have RM Clock installed and it likes to fight with XP's settings for lcd off/standby/etc.

I would be surprised if there isn't some hardware switch to notify the laptop that the lid is closed.

Unfortunately I can't get to the product manual, the MS site in Taiwan (where the manual is) seems to be down...

Well, I have the manual, but I haven't checked that out yet. I know now that there is a sensor for sure, but that it may be malfunctioning. I'm in communication with Rawpowerpc about the issue.

Drumfu, that is a good point. I'll have to check on that as well.

Well, nothing I tried worked, even enabling hibernation per the request from Rawpower/MSI. I am pretty sure it's the sensor. If no one has any other ideas I'll have to check on that.

    That's a very strange problem.

When did it start happening? After installing something or messing with some third party tuning programs?
