What makes LCDs have different refresh rates?
Some have fixed 120Hz, while others have 60Hz or 59Hz.
i mean, is it the LCD panel itself, inverter, etc.?

    Which component is it exactly?
I'm in the mood to study the judder free thingy for a mod :D

    thanks in advance :)

Mine is fixed at 67Hz. Wondering what it means too. :)

I use the nvidia control panel to change my refresh rate for films I have usually 48Hz or 72Hz as they are multiples of 24 offering good framerate sync for smooth motion. The outputs are always off so I have to compensate using the advanced options. For example when set to 72Hz, reclock reports 71.3xx so I have to set it to around 72.750Hz to achieve a close enought value to true 72Hz.

will that work on games too? by the way, did you do that on your m15x display, or an external one?

just curious, cause mine is fixed 60Hz and i don't use NCP that often :D

No it won't work on games. When a different refresh rate is selected, your native res and native 60hz will not have 32 bit colour (but the custom ones will) so games will default to the second highest resolution. For games I usually select the second option, delete all my custom res's, reselect the 1080p 60hz and games will run fine again. It's hassle but it makes movies more enjoyable.

Agreed, movies are much more enjoyable in anti-jadder mode. As for gaming, I've seen some gameplays on youtube 120Hz vs 60Hz monitors side by side. but i don't see much difference between them, unlike watching movies which is easier to tell.

Is it fair if i just assume that a notebook with higher refresh rate LCD panel is not worth the investment / upgrade?

Unless you really want 3D, just stick with the 60Hz. I have even drop my refresh way down to 24Hz for the real cinema effect but usually I have it on 48Hz or 72Hz. Perhaps if I'm brave I'll see if I can do 96Hz because then I may be able to hack some kind of 3D (48Hz per eye)

Heh. I tried my laptop's screen and it only goes up to 93Hz. I generally keep mine at ~72Hz, because at 24Hz the cursor and everything feels really sluggish.

Luckily, my laptop's screen only goes black if I go any higher than 93Hz or any lower than 10Hz.
