I noticed there is a thread just over a year old regarding this exact topic... I think it's time to look at our options again! I'm really picky about my screens, I remember buying an Asus A8Js and exchanging it twice. I ended up returning it outright because I couldn't justify spending 1500 on a notebook with such a crappy screen. :(

That was a year ago. I settled with a much cheaper HP and while the screen was a little better, it left a lot to be desired. It's time to get something a bit more beefy, and all I'll look at are LED LCD screens! Here are the ones I know of:

    Dell XPS
    Sony Vaio
    Macbook

Not a lot... I remember reading that 2008 would be the year of the LED! Where are they?! Ideally I'd like to see a 15.4" or smaller with an LED backlit screen, 8600GT+, and HDMI. I realize the XPS 1530 fits the bill pretty closely, I'd just like to know of any other LED options. Maybe Asus?

The led screens are nice, cause they have much more even lighting and better contrast. aka whiter whites and darker blacks. They are slightly more power efficient, but they really shine when you use the system outside, Led screens are great outside even in high sun situations.
The Dell XPS1330 and 1530 ae nice options, teh sony ones are good too, not too sure about macbook, but I think all of them use the samsung led screens, so the quality should be the same across the board

I'd be very interested in a complete-ish list of current LED-backlit machines as well (13.3" to 15.4", as far as I'm concerned).

Sorry for going slightly OT, but how would one go about obtaining a LED-backlit Dell XPS 1530 in Europe/Germany? It seems to only be available on Dell's US site.

You're kinda wrong all over the shop here. LED backlighting is noticeably brighter, resulting in better outdoor performance.

While the fact that LED backlighting is already available in TabletPCs is great for hardcore tablet pc users like yourself, it doesn't mean that LED backlighting is not available for other types of notebooks. I already listed a few makers that are really pushing LED backlit screens, and a lot of them have beefy discrete graphics.

What I'm trying to do is get a complete list of notebooks that have LED screens. Thanks for your input on tabletpcs, but it doesn't apply at all here, especially when it's riddled with fallacies.

I am as OCD about LCDs as they come.. I dare anyone to beat me :)

Dell's new 15.4" studio has the exact same LED screen option as the XPS.

Actually the Macbook doesn't have an LED screen, just the MBP and Air.

There are some Asus with LED screens but I've seen better non-LED.

See when it comes to LCD screens there are usually about 2-3 actual possible parts for each screen you order. One will stand out as superior over all the others and the rest come out average or below. For example, the 15.4" WXGA glossy on HP's and Toshiba's laptops which are an LG screen are really quite nice. Same laptop with same configured LCD ending up being a SEC screen were difficult for me to look at.

Sony makes a great screen but they tend to have really bad backlight bleed problems. My dad has a 17" AR series and the bleed is awful. Great screen otherwise though. It's not isolated. I notice the same problems from Sony's I see on display in stores.

Some Fujitsu notebooks also have LED screens, like the P8010, but as been reviewed as having poor contrast and viewing angles. In comparison, there are also Fujitsu notebooks with some nice non-led screens.
