So, I'm no expert on screen tech but I think I know the basics, at least with TV's. With TV's there's 2 types of LED backlighting, one where they have LEDs around the edge that provide constant backlighting or a complete matrix of LEDs that can do local dimming. Which of these are used in LED LCD laptop displays? I'm assuming the first but am hoping for the second!

First. Second is too complex for the small size of laptop screens.

I have a matrix of LEDs dimming on the vaio Z. I hope noone's using the first method you mentioned anymore. They're cheap. The screen is so bright I can never keep it on full brightness. What can I say... you get what you paid for.

You are mistaken. AFAIK no laptops have matrix led backlighting. They all have led's around the border.

I am wrong indeed. I just noticed the source of light is comming from the top and bottom mostly, I'm not sure about the left and right side. There's either nothing there or they're dimmed.
