I don't really understand how LED screens have suddenly come into the market. I thought the diode was a very old piece of technology that has been around for years, in clocks and watches, and information signs. And I though each LED was massive, not the size of a tiny pixel.![]()

They're not really LED screens, they're LED-backlit LCD screens.
I don't know why they weren't popular before... probably because of price. -
Yeah, while it's possible to use OLED's for laptop screens, LED's are really only useful in huge stadium monitors and such. Laptop's advertised with "LED Screens" are really just plain old LCD's with LED backlighting, giving a brighter, more evenely lit screen.

Oh okay. Thanks
I'm guessing they just use white LEDs behind the crystal-glass layers? -
Although LEDs have been around for a long time, I think it's only recently that they have started making advances in color and brightness. Before a few years ago I do not think they were able to make bright white LEDs like they can now.
Now you are seeing them all over the place.
And I believe all the LED's are even placed around the outside of the LCD screen. They shine them into a thin glass plate that diffuses the light behind the screen. -
Yes, LED's are an old technology kind of like computers or should I say mainframes. And yes LED's can be big just like computers can be big. I mean the old mainframes used to take up entire rooms. Who would of thought we would be able to carry these "mainframes" around with us or that cpu's would become so small. Do you think that processors were the only electronic component to go through this trend.
Most LED screens are big like the jumbotrons at sports arenas. But they are getting smaller. -
Before the developement of luxeon (tm) and other full watt clas leds it just wasn't practical. Nichia started with some 'super brites' in the 90's and you see them in all kinds of flashlights. They also paved the way for led lighting in vehicles. One of my hobbies a few years ago was modding flashlights. I have several modded lights including a rather impressive modded maglite.
Here is more info on leds in general and modding flashlights in particular. Checkout Mr. Bulk's stuff, he was very very cutting edge a few years ago and even now they are magnificent pieces. I have tried several times to aquire a lion cub but failed(I would kill for a lion head to go with it). I haven't been around the scene or forums since last spring ('06) but it looks like things are still happening.
