I was wondering if the LED screens are superior for gaming, graphics, movies, photos? And what current laptops have them, just the Dell 1330/1530, and Macbooks? No Sagers, Asus, Acer, etc?

The Sony SZ, TZ, ASUS U1, U2, U3, LG p300 are others off the top of my head. Majority of LED screens are on portable and sub-portable notebooks.

Regarding if they are better or not, its hard to say, but most people do say its better. Do they say it because it is better or they say it because they are subconsciously telling themselves that the $150+ extra was worth it, well.... :p Looking at it in person, it does not usually seem like there is a difference, however, in certain angles and brightness, there is an edge for the LED screens. But LED screens vary from manufacturer, so your mileage may vary.

from what i've seen in person... head on, they look exactly the same. the LED's have slightly better viewing angles without much color loss or distortion. most people don't tend to look at their notebooks sideways though.

They allow for thinner screens, slighter more battery life. They are more power efficient and should give a better, brighter picture.

My Vaio TZ's screen is a joy to look at as will any TZ owner agree.

The only disadvantages are the higher cost, only in a few notebooks and maybe slight backlight bleed on the bottom of the screen where all the LEDs are.

As with most things it depends, to AD's, photographers and the like LED's is the holy grail in terms of flat panel technology with better viewing angles, larger gamut and contrast range - the average Joe however might not need those extra features.

depends on the screen, LED is only the backlight, in theory it should be less power consumption, thinner, and better viewing angles. but something only works as well as the lowest denominator

LEDs are more efficient than the normal tubes, so either more brightness for the same power or less power for the same brightness as a normal backlight.

And you don't have any inverter or tube to go wrong. Inverter failure must be near the top of the list of notebook hardware problems.

Sony and Fujitsu also use LED screens. Short answer is yes they are superior. Some people in this thread can't tell the difference.. I sure can. Most people can.. whether or not you need one depends on your usage and how particular you are.

Asus U series use LED? That I did not know..

Dell has not yet offered the XPS 1530 with the option of an LED screen.

Hmm thanks for that. I think I need to do some research with these then. Currently leaning toward a Fujitsu A6120 but I really would like something smaller.. just having a hard time finding something cool enough running with a nice enough screen.
