I'm going to buy a Dell XPS M1330, and the max I can spend is 1000€. I've decided to start from the second config, the one that for 899€ gives you the T5550 the 8400M GS, 2 GB of RAM, and a 250GB HDD. For 10 € you can change the HDD to a 7.200rpm 200GB one (with free-fall sensor); I'd prefer this, as I just bought a 160GB external drive, so right now speed is more important than storage space.

And here is the question: for 70€ I can upgrade the CPU to a T7250, and for 80€ I can upgrade the screen to a LED one. Since I can only choose one of the two if I want to stay within 1000€, what upgrade do you think is more worth it?

well it depends what do u need the computer for ?

and i would go for the CPU because the screen wont have a big difference except if ur a heavy gamer!

I would not let Dell pick my harddrive. They may supply you with a 7200rpm that is not that fast. For example the Seagte momentus 7200.2
    http://www.storagereview.com/Hitachi250WD320.sr?page=0,3

I would buy a Hitachi 7k200 myself and build it in myself.

I am not a fan of LED screens, however I have not seen the one on the Dell.
If you want to read my opinion on the two 13,3" LED screens I had go here:

    LED has three advantages though:
-Brighter, so better visibility outside, even in sunlight.
-Energy efficient, so better battery life.
    -Lighter.

I would definitely go for the nicer screen. It would also give you better battery life. You will always be looking at the screen while the processor will spend most of its life throttled down anyway (if you are mobile at all). Bottom line is you will notice the difference between the different LCD screens while you won't be able to tell the difference between the different processor speeds unless you pull out a stop watch while encoding video. :)

I would opt for the LED screen first. There have been people in the Dell forum who have used both and have had both in hand and they have said that the M1330 LED screen is slightly brighter than the CCFL screen.
I am sure that i have read other posts on this but the search is down right now.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166419

Also, the LED screen is thinner and it looks better to me because of that and it also weighs slightly less than the CCFL screen.
The LED screen is also more power efficent.

I think that the LED screen is better although the CCFL screen should be fine as well.

I owned an M1330 and i was happy with the LED screen that i got but some people seem to complain about grain issues more with these LED screens but there are many people also who do not have these sort of issues.

    Go with the T7250.

LED screen is good, but it's not THAT good, I mean the difference is minimal.

The problem is the T5550 has a FSB of 667 instead of 800.

You can always upgrade the CPU later, upgrading the screen would be much more difficult and expensive. I'd go for the screen.

This one is tuff. I think I might pick CPU. But I might also get LED and upgrade CPU later on my own. Can you get neither and get 8600m GT? If so I would get that.

Can the T7250 processor even fully support 800mhz of ram in the XPS M1330 laptop? I don't think that it can.

Also there is not much difference in speed at all between 1.83ghz-2ghz. The chances are that if you are looking at a 2ghz processor that a 1.83ghz is probably going to be powerful enough for you as well. Most people won't even notice the difference.
Both of these processors both use 2mb of cache.

no intel chipset at the moment can run the memory at 800MHz, The intel chipsets will all downclock teh memory to 667Mhz.
I would personally go for the processor because the difference in speed will be noticeable, whereas by spending more on teh screen, the performance does not change. You will be getting more bang for the buck from the T7250.
LED screens are nice, but too much money for something which only saves minimal power over the traditional ccfl backlights.

Since not everyone agrees that a LED screen looks better, you should really see it for yourself.

In my opinion many ccfl screens look better than LED screens.

go for the LED screen if you like the way they look

it's much easier for most people to upgrade a CPU than to replace the screen
