Circuit City has them on sale for $69.99.. which one do you think it is better? I plan to buy 2-year replacement plan as well.

Seems like GE20 is new model according to Circuit City but I couldn't find any American info about that model. It's not listed at LG's web site either.

Samsung's model looks like it's been on the market for awhile though.

In my experience I have found samsung drives to be better than LG drives. I usually use pioneer or liteon, cause they offer the best optical drives.

If you are not happy with your optical drive, you can always swap the physical drive out of the enclosure with any 5.25" optical drive you like. (As long as the replacement uses the same interface as the one which came with the external optical drive)

    One other question:
Is this external going to be used for a laptop or a desktop?

If its for a laptop you may want to get a faster slimline optical drive for your laptop, cause burning disks over usb will be a huge bottleneck.

If the external is going to be used for multiple computers, than its fine.
I am just suggesting getting a internal drive, rather than an external - cause the external drive will be pretty slow cause of usb.

Thanks for the indepth reply. I will be getting one for a laptop because it does not come with an optical drive.

As much as possible, I try to buy products from offline because the shipping to Hawai'i is ridiculous at best.

I will use them primarily for burning music CD, recovery/restore/install Windows and/or software, and some college works that requires CD to run. That's about it.

Either of them will be fine for your needs. Since you will be getting them from the store, you will be able to see the drives in person. I would go with the Samsung, but if you like the styling of the lg better go with that.
Both drives are good, and if you can get a warranty through the place your buying it, you will be covered. Usually if a optical drive fails from the start, get it replaced. If the drive lasts for more than a few months without problems, than it should last a long time. Optical drives usually last a long time.

LG drives were sold out (they only had 2 few days ago when I visited Circuit City).

So I bought the Samsung drive as well as 2-year replacement plan for $14.

    Total of $84 including tax.

    Thanks for your advice!
