I have an old Dell Inspiron 9300. Was rolling with a LP171wu1 (a4) and developed a vertical 1.5" black line with some colored flicker within it. I hooked up an external monitor and saw no defect. Decided to replace the LCD. Perhaps I got some crap info, but was sent a LP171WU1-tla2 to replace the a4. After hooking it up I get nothing on the screen. Black. Going back to the old - same old problem, but at least it works. Can I switch the inverter from the a4 to the tla2, is the device bad and I can send it back to babatek.com, or is this a deeper problem and I'm screwed?

(impossible to find on the web what those suffixes mean? (a4) and (tl)(a2).

Bottom line: Are the LP171WU1 (a4) and LP171WU1 (tl)(a2) compatible or interchangeable?

Thanks a mil for the quick replies!

They both appear to be a standard 17" WUXGA panel with a CCFL backlight. I don't see a reason why it should not have worked.

However, it is possible that you could have received a defective unit.

Per babatek.com the panel's are not compatible. Through my research; the suffixes typically represent manufacturing variability - plant etc. except when they do not. Yes, it is that helpful out there. Usually the same part numbers are compatible, except for when the are not. I had originally been using the Dell K9922. Dell tells me that D8987 would also work. I have no way to test if that LP171WU1 (tl)(a2) was defective or incompatible.

The moral of this story is when buying a part that you are not certain of compatibility make certain to confirm with the company their opinion. Babatek.com's policy is that if you order the wrong part, you are stuck with it. No returns. They will give you store credit and charge you a stocking fee. If they sold you the wrong part on their advice, you might have a better case.

    Good luck all.

Hi Hullspd720. Later on near the end of the week, or perhaps next week depending on how slow UPS delivers, I am going to replace my LP171WU1 TLB1 with the LP171WU1 TLA2 that you also have.

Anyway, have you tried using the inverter for your original screen with the new screen?

I just finished installing my new LCD panel, Hullspd720. The TLA2 is quite a beautiful screen compared to my old TLB2. It is noticably brighter as well.

bump for more info because the other thread you were on spoke about how they were all compatible. I'm wondering if my screen was just a fluke as well :p

Yup tried the old inverter. Even tried it with a new TL A2 and I get nothing. This is getting really frustrating. The second supplier sends me the same LCD - LP171WU1 TLA2 when I request a replacement for the original part - Dell K9922. It makes me think that the part should work, but could this be a second DOA LCD?

Where did you get your TLA2 from, if I may ask?

First one I got from Babatek.com and returned it. They simply refused to discuss the issue and stated that they were incompatible. The second I recieved from 247laptoplcd.com or blisscomputers. The second was ordered as a replacement to k9922 and they sent me the LP171WU1 TLA2. I have not been able to reach their tech support to discuss compatibility vs DOA. Their LCD was without inverter. I used my old inverter.

That's the thing that is confusing me as well. I had to use my old inverter from my TLB2 with my TLA2 since the OEM inverter that came with the TLA2 had a different socket. Your old inverter should work just fine since it is also an LG. Did you make sure the video cable in the back is secured tightly?

The cable seems to fit perfectly. Something is getting through as there is an Intel Centrino symbol faintly in the lower right hand corner at boot, but then nothing ever subsequently shows? Its either a backlight issue or the LCD just will not talk? Too frickin frustrating.

Is there any software adjustments that you need to switch LCD? Settings on the video card or bios?

No software adjustments are needed. All compatible panels are plug and play. Have you checked the connection on the motherboard?

Newest update looks like the TLA2 and A4 are compatible in that I can clearly see the image with a flashlight, but the TLA2 will not light up with the old inverter from the A4 or the new inverter from the TLA2. The old inverter works well as I have been able to reinstall the old screen with no problem (except for the original).

Perhaps Dell blocks me from using the new screen?

Doesn't seem probable that two seperate LCDs from two seperate companies have bad bulbs? Is that common? :(

That would be as probable as finding a hay in a needlestack.

Also, make sure that the cable that goes from the motherboard to the inverter isn't under any pressure. When I was swapping out screens for a few clients before, the cable would accidentally get caught between a screw mount causing the inverter to malfunction and not light up the backlight fully or at all.

Looks like it was a bulb issue. I sent the TL A2 back to 247laptoplcd.com ( Bliss Computers ) and Luis in tech sup was quite helpful. He tested and the bulb was out on the second screen. Babatek.com was not so helpful up front in deciding what the problem was. They immediately noted that I had ordered an incompatible screen and charged me an 8% restocking fee. They are currenlty unwilling to discuss the issue in detail. I now believe that the first monitor also had a bad bulb.

Long story short..... I am up and running with a beauti of a TLA2 running the A4 inverter and no probs. Thanks for all of your advice!

Wow, what are the odds of you having two bad bulbs, haha. Anyway, I'm glad you got your TLA2 up and running. That screen is quite a beauty to behold. I'm had mine for a few weeks now and it is too good to turn away from. Games and movies look incredible on the TLA2.
