I was looking at a good deal on a second gen i7 laptop. I found the Dell Inspiron 17R Laptop Intel® Core i7-2670QM but it comes with a 5400 rpm drive! I cant find a manual for it so I called Dell (twice). The first tech said this laptop was compatible with an SSD drive and it was Sata III. The second person said it was NOT compatible with SSD and it was Sata II. I assume that even if it was Sata II it would still be compatible with a SSD but I just wanted to make sure.
Any suggestions or laptop brands to stay away from that may have issues with SSDs?
Thanks!!

It would be compatible with SATA III 2.5 SSD, but to be sure download the latest BIOS update from DELL support

Whoever told you it wasn't compatible was probably some guy hired to handle the basic service calls that doesn't really know his stuff. ANy and i really mean any laptop that supports SATA 2.5"HDDs will support SATA 2.5" SSDs. There are other factors you might want to consider like the OS, AHCI in bios, etc. However, on a second gen core i laptop, those will be there for sure so if you want a SSD, go ahead and get one. You might need to get another drive caddy if your laptop has dual HDD bays and you want a dual HDD setup.
