Does anyone know if there is a 1TB hard drive with form factor 2.5" and in standard 9.2mm thickness that is out in the market?? I can't seem to find any.
    Thanks.

I believe the highest capacity 9.5mm hard drive is still of 750GB, and 1TB available at 12.5mm height only.

Namaki is correct. Hitachi announced a single platter 500 GB drive which is the first step to a 1 TB 7200 rpm 9.5mm drive but then they were bought out by WD. Samsung is supposed to release a 1 TB 9.5mm 5400 rpm drive soon.

Thanks Tsunade and Namaiki . It just seems that it takes so long for them to have the 1tb out in 2.5" form. Must be some sort of tech bottleneck of some sort. Guess have to wait a more few months.

Out of curiosity, is there any noticeable temperature difference in between 9.5 and 12.5 mm drives? Theoretically larger drives should run hotter due to having larger friction area (i.e. 3 platters).

Actually very few laptops support the 12mm thickness.

I mean really the jump from a 750 GB to a 1 TB isn't significant or just wait for Samsung's 5400 rpm 1 TB drive.

Really? Seems like it taking a while. I mean you have 3TB for desktop now. Seems to be a scaling problem of some sort.

I would hazard that the operating temperature differences between 9.5mm and 12.5mm drives is going to be negligible at best. True, more platters mean extra armatures, which would introduce certain amounts of heat as they operate, how much that would be, I have no idea.

However, I do think that the vast majority of heat produced by a hard drive will be more dependant on the spindle speed of the hard drive than the number of platters in the storage device.

Heat generated would be by the motor. 500GB platters means only a matter of time to get the 1TB (dual platter) in 9.5mm. I have a 750GB but would also like a 1TB. Storage fills up fast. Granted I have a Windows Home Server to store stuff, but I keep a lot of crap on my main laptop and am too lazy to clean it out as often as I should. Story of my life.

I dont think I have seen 3.5" with more than 4 platters in the past 5 years~. So it isn't that big of a difference. Yes they have larger platter size.

    Hitachi already has a 500gb single-platter 7mm drive. 1TB 9.5mm hdd's can't be that far out.
