Are laptop blu-ray driver powerful and good enough to play blu ray on an external FHD TV or is it worth getting a bluray player instead.
I say this because I'm considering buying a 4x bluray read for my dv6.

A bluray player would be cheaper in the US, hard to say about austrailia. They run for like 75 bucks upwards of 150US for brand name and cheap brand names.
I vote yay for laptop drives. But any proper drive with proper software will be able to play any standard bluray (with the occasional exception for the same reasons bluray players wouldnt play it and need a firmware update).
Fore more than laptop money of course one of the better bluray players is actually the PS3. One of the few devices that could upgrade to bluray3d with a firmware update lol. It does lack a little hardware support for some features in the original models tho. -

Problems with a crappy drive, driver problems, and player software aside. As well as screen quality aside. No, You should get the same exact play back.
A proper drive, like the one you might have recieved if you overpayed through HP. No video card driver issues (This happens time to time, updates fix) and a good player software will provide perfect playback.
I have seen issues like say when 3D Blurays first came out and were tested on 3d laptops etc etc. All the latest and greatest situations. I cant garuntee you that you will have a smooth experience with what you pickup, but the answer is no you shouldnt have a problem.
Ive only owned 2 bluray players (ps3 included) 3 hdtv's and one bluray laptop, so im not an expert. But i have given stuff a try.
Mind you, not all features are always available from the hdmi out on a laptop. The 5650 shouldnt have an issues but of course its not bluray 3d compatible or anything like that should only be 1.3 spec output from that card and laptop. -
I see, could you recommend me a reasonable Blu-ray player for ~$100, or equivalently priced to the Laptop one - $70.

I literally just bought a sony bluray player for $118 (BDP-S270) that supports all the standard goodies as well as Netflix, YouTube etc. It lacks a wireless adapter but for way too much money u can add one. But in the US there are cheaper models made by comapnys like vizio and magnavox that arent bad.
AUS im not sure on problem is usually model numbers dont cross over. The region isnt the same. They tend to change model numbers even on the same hardware.
I dont watch import movies so one thing I have never checked to see if there is a hardware or software region issue with you buying a us bluray player for the laptop. -

I got one off ebay for £30 or $50.
You just need to get some good software. -

Anyways I had to laugh a second, technically we invented NTSC. If your using good software with a laptop player all online content will work fine. PS3 of course. For the Sony its for its ability to rent from netflix, watch youtube and use BD Live content. This one I just picked up is a gift I have not opened it to see if there is an ethernet on the back, should be but box doesnt say. I only spent extra money on the sony because it is for someone who likes name brand stuff. -
Well If the one you picked up is good, I might consider getting it, I don't really care about the wireless functionality of it.
