Hi. I have an Alienware m17x-r1.

My dvd-rom recently started taking several minutes to spin up successfully to read any sort of medium.

You can hear it engage, and click a few times, spin up first... then stop short. Then it repeats this several times. Then FINALLY it will start to read and windows will recognize it.

I've tried looking for new drivers, they dont seem to exist. the most recent one Win7 finds is from 2006.

I've tried flashing new firmware and even downgrading it, no success.

It's a Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-7590A ATA.

Also, anybody know a cheap DVD-Rom I can order possible if this one is on its last leg? I dont need a burner at this point in time. I can also invest in a newer better drive later.

    Thanks in advance. :]

Does that drive support Smart Bay Hot Swapping?

I have a 500gig that I have in the bay when I dont need the dvd reader. And Im looking for a drive that I can just pop in when I need it without having to restart.
