Hello, I need to swap a fan in a laptop, the original fan has blue, brown, gray, and black wires. I have two replacement fans that are the same voltage and amperage but they both have red, yellow, blue, and black wires. Does anyone know which wires match up?
Thanks in advance.

usually black is ground, red is power, yellow speed sensor and 4th wire is control, probably blue in your case, but as you can see some use different combination of colors. New fan should come with connector and connector should be wired properly (but doesn't have to). Normally crossing wires should not cause any problem, except it won't work, but sh??ty ones can be damaged. I would try to get schematics, that would show without any guessing what's what.

Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately the two fans I have are not direct replacement, and each plug is different. I have been trying to find a schematic but have not had any luck yet.

Normal laptop fan connector has pin 1 for ground, 2 for power, 3 for tach sensor and 4 for control. If I was you I would go by pins on your old connector and colors on new fan since they seem to match usual configuration. I would say 60% it would work, 30% it won't and 10% you damage fan, no idea if you can damage computer if you happen to crosswire.

In my not-so-modest experience, replacing a laptop fan with a non-stock unit is a very bad idea.
