What's generally considered to be the best laptop HDD manufacturer? Currently I'm considering drives from Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, Western Digital, and Fujitsu - but the official specifications are very similar for all of them.

Are there any which are particularly good or bad? I know Seagate's got the five-year warranty, but if another manufacturer is significantly better (quieter, faster, more reliable) then I'll get those instead.

The drive will be an 80GB SATA 5400RPM one (can't afford bigger/faster drives).

My top 2 choices would be Hitachi and Seagate. But the differences in performance are usually not that great, that I would pick another if it was a good deal.

If silence is a priority for you, Samsung HDDs are the quietest of the bunch. As a drawback they're ever so slightly slower that Seagate's or Hitachi's offerings, though.

Seagate and Hitachi drives will offer the best performance while Samsung will be the quietest.

Seagate Momentus offers fastest speed but a bit hotter, whereas Hitachi Travelstar is cooler than Momentus.
What abot Western Digital ?? Any thoughts?

Thanks for all the comments so far. I'm also rather interested in the Western Digital ones - they seem to be pretty new (in laptop HDDs anyway). Am I right in assuming that nobody really likes Fujitsu any more?

I'm also a bit confused about Seagate versus Hitachi in terms of heat. So far two people have mentioned it, and they've said the opposite thing.

Heat is probably the biggest issue for me, followed by noise. Speed doesn't matter too much unless the difference is huge.

Western Digital has the worst performing 2.5" drives out of anyone so to me they woudn't even be a thought.

The difference in heat between the Seagate and Hitachi isn't going to be enought o wory about. The Seagate will probably be a little more quiet although i've heard the Seagate drives make a distinct seek noise. Performance will be close between both. I like Hitachi but something else to consider is that unless something has changed Hitachi doesn't offer an advanced warranty replacement and Seagate does.
