I own a Dell Inspiron 1420. Its about 1 yr old and recently the keyboard went out, however, the mouse pad works. When i start my computer, it beeps loudly when i reboot, and it goes to a black screen telling me to choose my OS. Then locks. I have connected another keyboard by way of USB connection. When i hit F8 at time of rebooting, i am able to log in. I have tried replacing the keyboard and it still hasnt fixed it. Please help. Open for advice to fix this problem.

When you use your onboard keyboard nothing happens, but when you use a usb keyboard you can type.
Interesting, so their is one of two problems, the onboard keyboard you have is not connected properly, or it doesnt work.
Have you physically made sure the cable is connected all of the way?
Sometimes the ribbon cable slips past the connector a little too far, causing the keyboard to be mis-detected, and sometimes the cable just isnt clamped down properly.
You should double check again. If the problem still occurs you may want to call dell. A replacement keyboard is covered by your warranty.
If your system is out of warranty you can buy a replacement keyboard on ebay or online.
You should make sure to buy the same model keyboard, so that it fits in your laptop. The model of your keyboard is printed on the underside of your keyboard.
