I have Toshiba A135 that it's keyboard is in great cosmetic condition. Issue is 2-W-S-X (straight down the line) doesn't function. Nothing under obstructing the keys.

Question is, is it the keyboard or the keyboard controller on the MB? Those keyboard are not cheap comparing to other brands. $40 each. What could other reasons be?

Sounds like a keyboard issue to me. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard to see if it was a problem with the cable. Typically, if there is a problem with the keyboard controller, the entire keyboard wouldn't work.

And to answer your question, the keyboard controller is on the motherboard. And I don't know what you're expecting to pay, but $40 for a laptop keyboard is not expensive at all.
