    Hello,

I am trying to find out if anyone can help me find memory that is compatible to my Toshiba L305D-S5868. It currently has (2) hynix 1GB 2rx16 PC2-6400S-666-12 modules. I have searched many sites and can't seem to find a clear match and I have also heard that hynix memory is very low end. Can anyone recommend a different brand that would work better? I am open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

There's no low-end|high-end in SODIMM performance. And Hynix is the largest supplier of Generic OEM modules. :p

You can upgrade to 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 max. ( Specs)

And you need a 64-bit OS to address the whole 4GB.

Get the cheapest module/kit with a lifetime warranty (which matters more than performance).

(Crucial memory is good in terms of customer service)

Thanks Andy for the info. I do have a follow-up question for you. When you say 64 bit OS, I presume that windows vista is 64bit or do I need to verify my OS. Am I following you correctly on this one? Thanks.

vista comes in two flavours : 32bit and 64 bit. 64 bit is still not the standard for all machines.

if you do not know which vista version you got you are most likely using the 32 bit version. look at the basic info under system settings. it will tell you if you have a 64 bit os or not

Press the [IMG]-key + Pause|Break --> which will bring up the system properties. Here, check for System Type.

    .Vista 32-bit will address ~3GB.

Yep, it is 32 bit. Is it worth adding an additional 1gb? Is it difficult to upgrade to 64bit or is that a completely different animal that I should stay away from. It sounds as if I should possibly keep it the way it is, but I thought it might make games or photo programs run a little smoother. Thanks for all the info.

Vista runs fine with 3GB. You can get a 4GB Kit, if you can find a good deal.

For upgrading to Vista 64, you'll have to do a clean install. Your OEM key is compatible for both Vista 32 and 64, but you may need to get a 64-bit Install disc, and probably activate by phone as well.

It mainly depends upon the applications you run. There are very few users who actually use up the full 4GB whilst doing something useful. ;)

    Also, checkout this guide.

Thanks for all the great info, but I think I will stick with what I have. If it ain't broke, don't break it. I currently have 2gb of memory and it seems to work just fine. I thought I might add an additional 1 or 2gb of memory, but oh well. Again, thanks for all the info/advise.
