My Asus laptop has a shot power ribbon. Problem is, this ribbon is next to impossible to find, and so far I can only find it on a complete palmrest assembly which costs around $100.

The power ribbon solder is 0.5mm per line and it has 18 lines in total.

I've heard about making your own ribbon cables by buying a 20 pin one, and then trimming it down to the required amount of pins you desire (18 in this case). How would one go in this manner?

This http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Powe...le-for-Acer-4720Z-4920-reverse/815032872.html seems to have the right measurements aside from the length and width of the lines. It's a 20 pin. I need an 18 pin, so trimming it may work.
